Whether you’re a law-abiding citizen or a first responder, knowing your state’s body armor laws is crucial before strapping on that vest. Federal law generally allows anyone to buy and wear armor—except convicted violent felons—while state regulations vary widely, from Connecticut’s in-person purchase rule to New York’s outright ban for civilians. Some states even add extra penalties if you commit a crime while armored or prohibit vests at protests and on school grounds. Before you gear up in your Level 4 plate carrier, check local statutes so you can exercise your right to protection without risking unintended legal consequences.
