The NBC-77 SOF® is our flagship 40mm gas mask filter, designed to provide comprehensive respiratory protection against a wide range of chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats. When combined with a compatible full-face gas mask or PAPR, this NATO-standard filter helps protect your airways from all known CBRN agents, toxic industrial chemicals, radioactive iodine, organic iodine compounds, and hazardous particulates.
The NBC-77 SOF® uses a standard Rd 40 × 1/7" thread in accordance with STANAG 4155 (EN 148-1), making it compatible with most modern 40mm gas mask filter platforms. Its rugged hard-plastic housing is engineered to withstand shock and impact in operational use, helping to protect the filtration media and preserve performance in the field.
New Color Options for the ®40mm Gas Mask Filter
We’re excited to introduce two new color options for the NBC-77 SOF® 40mm gas mask filter canister, giving you more flexibility to match your equipment to your environment:
-
Ranger Green: A versatile, muted green shade that blends well into woodland and mixed terrain environments. This color option provides excellent camouflage for tactical and field applications where visual signature matters.
-
Sandstone: A neutral, earth-toned color ideal for desert, arid, and rocky terrains. This option offers effective concealment in bright, sandy, or stone-dominated environments.
These new finishes join the existing lineup, providing even more versatility for a variety of operational needs. Whether you’re operating in dense forests, arid deserts, or urban environments, there’s now an NBC-77 SOF® gas mask filter color to match your requirements, without any difference in performance or specifications.
Roman’s Take on the NBC-77 SOF® Gas Mask Filter
The NBC-77 SOF® is my go-to recommendation for anyone who wants a single filter that truly does it all. What makes it stand out is that it combines three major filtration capabilities: classic CBRN protection, coverage for toxic industrial chemicals, and DIN-rated reactor performance into one cartridge.
Typically, agencies would stock separate filters for CBRN agents, industrial gases, and radioactive iodine compounds like methyl iodide. With the NBC-77 SOF®, you get all of that in one package. It’s rated for all known CBRN agents, covers a very wide range of TICs, and is one of the few consumer-accessible filters that’s actually tested and rated as a Reactor filter, meaning it can filter radioactive methyl iodide gas.
The second big advantage is shelf life. At 20 years, this filter outlasts most competitors by a factor of two or three. A lot of CBRN filters have a 5–7 year shelf life, which means you’d replace them multiple times over the life of a single NBC-77 SOF®. When you look at the cost of ownership per year, this filter ends up being one of the most economical options out there, while still offering some of the broadest protection you can get.
From a preparedness standpoint, that combination is rare. You get long shelf life, real CBRN capability, strong coverage against toxic industrial chemicals, and nuclear-reactor-grade filtration in one unit. If you’re looking for a “one-and-done” filter to keep on hand for serious emergencies, this is the one I point people to.

Application Range for This NBC Filter
The filter canister in connection with a suitable gas mask or PAPR provides protection against solid and liquid particles, pepper spray (OC), smoke-producing substances, radioactive particles, bacteria and rickettsia, fungi, toxins, viruses, riot control agents (lachrymators, sternutators, vomiting agents), blister agents (vesicants), choking agents, blood agents, nerve agents, incapacitants, herbicides, pesticides, and TIC, such as bromoacetone, CS, CR, CN, CNC, CNS, CA substances, organic compounds of arsenic - diphenyldichlorarsine - CLARK I (DA), diphenylcyanoarsine - CLARK II (DC), adamsite (DM), diphenyldichlorarsine (DA), ethyldichlorarsine (ED), methyldichlorarsine (MD), mustard gas (H), sulphur mustard gas (HD), T-mustard gas, Q-mustard gas, nitrogen mustard gases (HN1, HN2, HN3), lewisite (L), mixed mustard gas (H-L), phosgene oxime (CX), phosgene (CG), diphosgene(DP), chloropicrin (PS), hydrogen cyanide (AC), cyanogen chloride (CK), arsine (SA), G-agents: sarin (GB), cyclosarin (GF), soman (GD), tabun (GA), IVA (GV), V-agents: VX, VR, VE, VG (amiton), VM and toxic industrial chemicals such as: fumes of organic or inorganic acids, hydroxides, organic solvents with a boiling point above 65° C, ammonia, amines, inorganic and acid gases, agricultural chemical combustion gases, other toxic substances, e.g. benzene, toluene, vinyl chloride, fluorine, hydrogen fluoride, sulphur oxides, chloroacetic acid, aldehydes, mixtures of inorganic acids, and organic substances, mercury vapors, radioactive iodine, organic compounds of iodine (Iodomethane, 129, 131), radioactive particles, etc.
Service Life of the NBC-77 SOF® Gas Mask Filter
Breakthrough time of a gas mask filter is tested according to EN 14387+A1 at 70% relative humidity and a flow rate of 30 l/min, which is equivalent to the volume of air per minute used by an average person carrying out medium-heavy work. The approximate lifetime (usage time) of the NBC-77 SOF® filter may, under normal conditions, be estimated by comparing the concentration at the workplace with the minimum Dynamic Adsorption Capacity (DAC) specified for the filter.
Gas Mask Filter Storage and Maintenance
Each NBC-77 SOF® gas mask filter is sealed in a plastic bag by the manufacturer. Store the filters unopened in a clean place at a stable temperature, ideally between -5 °C and +30 °C with relative humidity below 80%. Sealed filters tolerate conditions from -30 °C to +50 °C with relative humidity below 95%. The storage period (month and year) for filters is marked on the filter label.
Do not attempt to regenerate the filters. Never clean the filters with compressed air or water, as this can damage the filtration media and compromise protection.
Gas Mask Filter Disposal
After use, gas mask filters are considered hazardous waste. Make sure they are disposed of according to the substances filtered (gases or particles) and in accordance with current waste treatment regulations. Before disposal, remove the filter from the respirator and dispose of it as solid waste. Please see local authority regulations for disposal advice and approved locations.
⚠️ Note: Due to limited stock, the NBC-77 SOF® gas mask filter may ship in Ranger Green or Sandstone instead of Black. Color may vary from images, but performance and specs are identical.
